Last night, and again tonight, one of my flatmate’s old friends is staying with us. When I say old I mean he’s been a friend for a long time, but he’s only in his mid 20’s. He’s a model mainly based with his girlfriend in Milan and he was in the movie “Newcastle” as one of the minor characters.
He’s a really nice guy but my god man, just stop talking for a while! He’s obviously going through a decision making phase of life but for the most part sounded like a completely stoned surfer dude. He is a surfer dude but stoned he wasn’t.
It was funny when we went out for a beer and a meal, watching people blatantly staring at him. He is a very good looking guy. One older gay man in the thai place we went for dinner was asking the waitress where the toilet was, but didn’t look at her once, just transfixed by our model companion.
I stumbled across a site set up recently by a Sydneysider for gay surfers, Gaysurfers.net. Gay surfers are a bit of a hidden subculture with the Samesame online series “Surf Camp” almost sending up the idea, but it’s ludicrous to imagine there aren’t thousands of surfers out there with same sex attraction but maybe it’s one of those cultures that just doesn’t foster being open. I know in Sydney some of the beach breaks are quite territorial, like my former lifesaving area, Bronte and the famously rough Maroubra.
At the moment the site is still in it’s infancy and the features and usability will grow over time but I am hopeful for it’s success. At the moment however, all the “gay friendly beaches” in Australia are the nude beaches in NSW as well as Alexandria Bay in Noosa.
Update: I’ve had an email from Thomas, the sites administrator and he assures me that he is monitoring the forums to keep the site on track for what it is, a networking site for gay surfers, and not for guys trying to land themselves a surfer boy or a blow job in the bushes. I think the site is a great idea and who knows maybe we can hope to see an international gay surfing competition like those that exists for rugby and waterpolo etc.
The clip I posted yesterday was indeed from the movie “Newcastle“. I went and rented it yesterday afternoon. It was perfect for the rainy, post Mardi Gras day we were having in Sydney.
Newcastle is a real city, a couple of hours North of Sydney, with a steel industry background and working class residents. The movie is really well shot, especially for a small budget movie. The cast are all spectacularly beautiful but can act as well. Having grown up in a rival “Steel City” south of Sydney, also on the beach, it’s an environment I know well. I think that might be why I found a lot of the guys really hot in the movie. They are the kinda guys I used to see all the time at the beach about the time I was hitting puberty and as I’ve theorised before, I think that’s about the time I locked in the kinds of guys I like.
We are in the midst of the Sydney Festival at the moment here in Sydney, which means there are events going on all over the place like concerts, plays, and all sorts of stuff. There used to be a rival Sydney Fringe Festival every year as well. I’m not sure if that still happens but one event in the fringe festival doesn’t happen.
The Bondi Twighlight nude surfing competition used to be a very popular event but due to unruly press photographers and too many spectators it was canned. Such a shame. It’s definitely something that I think should be brought back!
Take 5 guys, give them surfing lessons with a cute Brazilian guy and vote them off one by one and you have Surf Camp! Head on over here to vote after you’ve watched the boys, Ryan, Jesse, Brennan, Josh and Ben take their classes from Rafael, below.
