New Matt Mitcham by Ross

Ross Watson unveiled two new paintings of Matthew Mitcham our gold medal winning diver who recently continued his form scoring TWO perfect tens at a recent competition. In one of the new works, Matt has even ditched the speedos! It seems that this collaboration is one they both enjoyed and is yielding some good results for Ross.

Ross Watson 2010

Ross Watson opens his annual exhibition in Sydney this Tuesday evening 23rd February. Ross exhibits every year to coincide with Mardi Gras and I always love going along to see new work and revisiting some of his older work.

The exhibition closes on Saturday March 6th, the day of the official party marking the end of Mardi Gras. It will be held at The Depot Gallery, 2 Danks Street Waterloo. Those of you in the area or not working can also meet Matthew Mitcham at the exhibition on Wednesday 3rd March between 11am and 1pm.

Ross meets Matthew

Ross Watson has just unveiled his beautiful portrait of Matthew Mitcham, as well as these photos of Matthew and Marco Da Silva. The portrait of Matthew is so rich and vibrant and in recognition of Matthew’s contribution to the gay community and sport, the painting has been reserved by the National Portrait Gallery.

Ross Watson, a new record and Matt Mitcham

Our Olympic Diving golden boy, Matthew Mitcham has just modelled for Australian Painter and Photographer, Ross Watson and will be featured in paintings and photographic artworks to be released in the near future. Matt has kept a relatively low profile since his Olympic glory, focusing on training and life in general.

A new Ross Watson painting has also just set a new record for a Ross Watson original, selling for AU$38,000. Not a bad little earner I have to say. The painting isn’t my favourite of Ross’ work, but it provides an interesting contradiction between old and modern forms of communication.

Matthew’s sponsorship problem - the truth.

When I posted about Matthew Mitcham’s lack of sponsorship I was vaguely aware of a situation but wasn’t sure what was public in formation and what wasn’t. Now, with this article on samesame it’s out.

AussieBum did offer Matt sponsorship months ago, which was effectively ignored by his management. You have to ask yourself why? The offer from AussieBum was a six figure deal and effectively secure employment as the face of the global company and a perfect fit for Matt. So why is his management turning down offers like this? Holding out for something better? Clearly that isn’t rushing to happen.

I hope something changes for Matt soon. He’s training 30+ hours per week and somehow eeking out a living as well.

More congratulations to Matt

Matthew Mitcham continues to rake in the accolades and awards after his stunning win in Beijing. Sadly that hasn’t been followed with sponsorship deals. Diving has never been a glory kinda sport but surely there’s a big company out there who wants someone articulate, down-to-earth, hot and talented to represent them?

“Readers of The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald voted that Mitcham’s upset win over his favoured Chinese opponents, sealed with a final dive that received a perfect 10 from four of the seven diving judges, was the year’s best sporting achievement.”

Matt awarded again

Our golden boy Matthew Mitcham was last night named joint winner of the “Don Award” Australia’s sporting hall of fame award. Pole vaulter Steve Hooker was the other recipient of the award. It’s a huge thing for a blokey sporting country like Australia to award a gay sportsman like this but at the same time it does go along with the attitude that as long as you are good at sport in this country, you are ok.

Congratulations to Matt and Steve! Check out the full story over at Towleroad

Matt’s golden DNA

DNA’s issue #105 hit the stands with Matthew Mitcham on the cover. It’s a nice simple cover too, and he has such a lean toned body, how could he look bad

Rumours and whispers

Website Samesame today posted an article suggesting that aussieBum was very close to signing a  sponsorship deal to make Matthew Mitcham the face (and butt?) of their brand. I think the two are a perfect fit.

Unfortunately, after being in touch with aussieBum today, they denied a deal is done or close to being done. They are very proud of Matthew and his stunning victory in Beijing, but Matthew isn’t even back in Australia yet and hasn’t spoken to anyone about a deal. He has signed with a management agency, but no deals are done yet. But I think I speak for all of us when I say I’m seriously looking forward to the aussieBum shoots that may hopefully happen in the future with the sexy Matt.
