Which came first?

Recently I’ve come across a few blogs from guys that are very active barebackers, a couple of them trying to see how many loads they can take in the year or by the month. When I read stories like that where guys are taking load after load from strangers and being raw gangbanged, the first thing that occurs to me after the assumption that they are HIV+ is which came first, the love of cum or the HIV?

Did they contract HIV through an accident or slip in protection and once they were diagnosed figure “what the hell?” or did they always have a thing for cum and in pursuing that, did they contract HIV?

A guy was messaging a friend of mine last week, at three different points over many hours in one day. Each time the guy, who was 23 said “I’ve got another guy coming over, wanna join us?” and each of the 3 encounters were going to be raw. At 23 the kid is either incredibly naive, or already fully aware of his status and just cutting loose. The part that scares me is that he may have no idea of his status and be barebacking with guys that are poz or neg and possibly infecting people. Granted, anyone that barebacks with him is making their own choices and taking their own possibly educated risks.

HIV may not kill anymore the way it did 25 years ago, but it can kill and every treatment has side effects, financial, emotional and physical. For everyone, positive and negative, make your own choices, but look after yourselves!

Join the word of mouth against HIV!

World Aids Day 2009.

As I get older, I know more and more people living with HIV. Thankfully none of them are sick yet. On this, World Aids Day 2009, think about those that have left us, those that may do soon and those living strong and healthy. Educate yourselves, play safely, stay healthy and if you can, donate to research and fighting the spread.

Steve and Bruno are touring!

Steve Cruz and his partner in life and porn, Bruno Bond have just hit Sydney today spreading the safe sex message. They’ve been selling red ribbons to commemorate World Aids Day, today, and will be making appearances over the next few days!

Personally I think it’s brilliant that porn stars come out in support of safe sex. I read an article today that said generation Y are so ignorant about HIV and AIDS that they believe it can be caught from cutlery or toilet seats, yet are quite blasé about safe sex. Get your education on people!

Bruno and Steve are also recruiting for Raging Stallion Studios looking for the new up and cumming stars of porn. Sydney boys are notoriously shy when it comes to making porn but we have the hotties. Any of you with exhibitionist tendencies get in touch with Raging Stallion or see Steve and Bruno at the Midnight Shift on Friday 4th or on their pub crawl on Thursday 3rd!

Update: If you want to get into porn with Raging Stallion, go to Hardfriction.

Stunning

I haven’t seen an HIV awareness ad with this impact for a long time.

Would you or could you?

The other night a good mate of mine and I were having a fairly in depth discussion about dating/men/relationships and both lamenting the fact that we are both single, stable, good looking guys who can’t seem to find a boyfriend. Sydney is a tough city to find a man even though all my single female friends swear all the good ones are gay, I beg to differ. My friend and I both want monogamy, affection, intimacy and all those simple pleasures that come with a relationship, yet neither of us have every had anything more than 6 months. He faces an additional hurdle in that he’s HIV+. In what I know is a sweeping generalisation, his perception is that most HIV+ men don’t seem too keen on monogamy. I countered that that applies to most gay men, especially in this town.

He and I met online and have fooled around a couple of times but not for a while. He put it to me directly, asking if I would or could date someone that was positive. In the past on this blog I’ve made bold statements that I didn’t think I could even shag a guy that I knew was positive. That has since been proven incorrect and I’ve had sex with a couple of guys knowing their positive status. The answer to his question, and it wasn’t a proposition, was that I still don’t know, but it’s certainly not an instant no as it would have been possibly as recently as two years ago. So we decided to bring it to the blog and have a poll.

If you are negative, would you date a positive guy? If you are positive, would you date a negative guy? My friend is terrified at the prospect of accidentally infecting someone, and would have trouble coping if he did, but at the same time is prepared to date a negative guy. We are really keen to hear your answers.

Would you date outside your status?

  • I'm neg and only date neg guys (59%, 386 Votes)
  • I'm neg and I'll date either poz or neg (32%, 210 Votes)
  • I'm poz and I'll date either poz or neg (7%, 47 Votes)
  • I'm Poz and only date poz guys (2%, 13 Votes)

Gratuitous hotness with a conscience

This is D.O. He’s a hot Argentinian former T.V. presenter and model turned porn star. He’s about the only guy simultaneously working successfully as a fashion model and porn star. You might recognise him from his work with Rufskin.

He’s currently producing a book full of hot shots by 20 different photographers of his beautiful self which is raising money to fight AIDS. When it comes out, I’ll plug the hell out of it. What I wouldn’t give for guys that look like this to pose for me! Not that I’m complaining about the models I’ve had, but damn, who wouldn’t want this in front of them?

It makes you think… hopefully

Someone I know had this on their facebook status today.

90 people get the Swine Flu and everybody wants to wear a mask… A million people have AIDS and few people want to wear a condom…”

It makes me sad, it makes me mad

This post is in response to someone I saw online last night. I was on a gay chat site and I came across a profile of a very hot young 26 year old guy in the U.S. He had two lines on his profile “Looking for BB mates, Looking to convert.” I had a lot of trouble sleeping last night worrying about someone I’ve never met and the mindset that makes them want to convert.

Before I logged out of the site I sent him a message asking why he would want to convert to HIV+.

It turns out he reads this blog and recognised me. His response was that basically he loves BB sex. There was no more explanation so I can just assume that he figures if he’s Poz then he won’t have to worry any more. Firstly, anyone who is Poz and knowingly infects you, regardless of your permission, is committing a criminal offence and can be jailed. Secondly, HIV and AIDS can still kill. While the medications are keeping people alive and healthy for a very long time these days, the cost of medication in the US is ridiculously high, every medication has a side effect. You may be able to go to bareback parties and go crazy but then you open yourself up to cross infection.

I’m begging you Nick, reconsider. Sex with a condom is still very hot. Why jeopardise your futre for a few minutes of fun? Any HIV+ readers, please comment and reason with Nick. Any comments promoting bareback sex and HIV conversion will be deleted immediately.

Aussielicious Interview – HIV Doctor

A good friend of mine works as a doctor in the area of sexual health in the UK. He was kind enough to answer some questions on misconceptions and thoughts about HIV for me.

Clinics are now saying 6 weeks is the length of time after infection that a positive result will show up. Can it take longer?
The traditional ‘window period’ for testing after a specific risk is 12 weeks. However a large number of people who contract HIV have developed antibodies by 6-10 weeks. This has been known for ages. The test that we are discussing is the antibody test, however a viral load test can be positive within a week of the virus infecting someone.
The advice is the same as it always has been
1. HIV test but wait 12 weeks after the risk
2. Occasionally if someone is very anxious can do the HIV antibody test after 6-10 weeks as long as they know to come back at 12 weeks for a repeat test if the first test is negative
3. If someone is having a seroconversion illness we do a Viral load test which is different to the hiv antibody test and not done routinely.

I’ve been told that you will know when you are sero-converting by one person and by another that he didn’t have any idea. Does it affect different people differently?
Studies suggest seroconversion illness occurs in approx 20-30% of patients but the symptoms are very non specific and easily mistaken for a flu/sore throat/diarrhoea ie very common symptoms…which is the problem ,at their most infectious ,most people dont recognise or know they have HIV.

What is your opinion on the theory that there are people who are “immune” to HIV? I do occasionally see people who are having huge risk or long tem partners of known hiv infected partners who never got the infection themselves.

People are living longer and healthier without medication these days. Why do you think that is?
Hmmmmmm not sure we can make a general statement like that….people in Africa may not agree! Patients may be getting tested earlier and so,appear to live longer post diagnosis. In the early days of the epidemic, people were diagnosing in very late stage (AIDS) disease and die shortly after.

How many different strains of HIV would you estimate there might be out there now?
Apart from HIV 1 and HIV 2 , HIV 1 is subclassified into subtypes or clades, the list of wich is growing as different clades recombine and produce what we call recombinants. At the moment approx clades A-G exist plus an endless list of recombinant clades wich have not been classified as yet.

People still think it’s nearly impossible to catch HIV being the “top”. Do you have any statistics on infection rates for the varying sexual roles?
Check the following resource from http://www.bashh.org/guidelines.asp and click the second link under HIV to download a pdf.

Is there any data on the percentage of the gay population currently living with HIV? Seroprevalence in london suggests 15-20% of all gay men london are positive. Not too sure in sydney…check the ASHM website

Young gays, please read!

Towleroad this week had a story about researchers finding a gene that inhibits the development of HIV. That is exciting news but the part that really struck me was the following comment from an HIV positive man.

“After being HIV positive for 20 years, I am running out of medication options. KNOW THIS BROTHERS AND SISTERS, HIV is not some “treatable” disease. Yes, one’s life can be extended and made more livable by medications, but those medications come with a financial and metabolic cost. Do not take HIV lightly! THINK LONG AND HARD (pardon the pun) before you make the life-threatening decision to bareback when having sex. There is no way to fully know the effects of HIV or the treatments for it until you are in it and dependent on the treatments to keep you not just healthful, but ALIVE.”

Chi Chi says “Safe sex is hot sex”

It’s so good to see people in the porn industry speaking up about safe sex. I’m all for people making their own informed decisions about their own sexual practices but it has to be informed and I just don’t think all the 18-20 year olds just hitting the scene have got the message. They seem to think they’ll be ok to go to a gang bang and bottom for ten guys without condoms.

Chi Chi has made a public service announcement video for Safe Sex is Hot Sex.
