How on earth?

A friend has given me some of the episodes of the 4th season of So you think you can dance from the US and I’m just watching the end of the first episode. This guy, Robert Muraine has just popped his way into my awareness and blown me away. I don’t know how people have this much control over their bodies or this much flexibility. He’s incredible and obviously has a sense of humour too. Enjoy.

The things you learn

Last night I was out on the scene dancing for the first time in ages. We were at a venue in Sydney that is renowned for being the anti-glamour venue. The people are all just regular guys and the music is pretty darned random. Last time I was there I saw a baby gay dancing with his top off to Lionel Ritchie’s “Dancing on the ceiling”. Last night was no exception. There was the usual mix of old Kylie , Madonna and Mariah but then Dolly would make an appearance and then came the clanger… Footloose. Now it’s been some very very long time since I’ve busted out any moves to that old classic but I learnt last night, that you can’t dance to that song like you can to all your other pop music. You HAVE to dance like Kevin Bacon did in the movie because NOTHING else works.

Did drugs kill the slowdance?

At dinner the other night for a friend’s birthday, a girl asked the question “What happened to the slowdance?” Remember when you were at the school dance at the end of the night there was always a slow dance and everyone would be pashing (snogging) their boyfriends/girlfriends and dancing that awkward teenage side shuffle with their arms around each other. Even in movies from the 80′s they would show slow dances at the end of the night in nightclubs.

Where did the slow dance go? Did drugs kill the slow dance because no one can actually slow down? Are gay men capable of the slow dance? My theory is that yes, drugs mean people can’t physically stop themselves dancing, or there’s no room for two in a K hole. The other theory is that if gay men slowed down on a dance floor and stopped waving their hands in the air like they just don’t care, then the groping would start and the slow dance would end up quite horizontal with 100 participants.
