Sublime and surreal are two words that have been used to describe the self portraits of Kyle Thompson. Kyle is a self proclaimed loner who suffers from anxiety. He is only 21 and has only been exploring photography as an outlet for two years but when someone like Kyle finds their talent the world is going to notice. Kyle uses himself as a model because it was easier than asking someone else to do it and he can do exactly what he likes.
These self portraits reaffirm my belief that the truly creative people are slightly tortured in some way and they relate to the world in a different way to the rest of us. Just think, if Kyle was less anxious and more comfortable in social situations, then he wouldn’t be off exploring woodlands and abandoned houses submerging himself in puddles with miniature ships and standing in the river with balloons.
I’ve decided to start using people like Kyle as an inspiration. I’ve been toying with the idea of a series of self portraits for a while now and if one man can take such beautiful self portraits and be so creative, surely I can have a go too?
