There have been rumours about Wentworth Miller’s sexuality for a few years now but since Prison Break ended he’s been very quiet and I’d pretty much forgotten about him, much less give thought to his sexuality. So it was a bit of a surprise this morning to see all over the news that he’s come out. Unlike a lot of actors do it just for themselves or because they are getting in first before they are outed, Wentworth has done his coming out to stand up against the horrible situation in Russia that is causing violence against the LGBT community.

Wentworth has written a screenplay and was invited to a Russian Film Festival but chose to decline in an eloquent yet strongly worded letter which as since been shared all around the world.
“As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes,” Miller wrote in the letter, posted on GLAAD’s website. “However, as a gay man, I must decline.

I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government,” Miller continued. “The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systemically denied their basic right to live and love openly.

Perhaps, when if circumstance improve, I’ll be free to make a different choice,” Miller concluded. “until then.”

Congratulations to Wentworth on using his coming out to take a stand against government sanctioned injustice!
