Brendon Ayanbadejo is a linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens and is a vocal supporter for marriage equality which apparently has pissed off a Maryland state Delegate who wrote to Brendon’s bosses at the Ravens asking them to make him stop being political. Now I’m guessing Delegate Emmett C Burns Jr wouldn’t be upset if Ayanbadejo was being political in a conservative fashion, but because he’s supporting us gays then it’s all evil. Brendon Ayanbadejo has written a response to Delegate Burns but the really awesome response has come from another NFL Player, Punter for the Minnesota Vikings, Chris Kluwe who has written a very colourfully worded letter to Delegate Burns. You can read the full letter here, but I’ll highlight a few of the more entertaining sections.

Needless to say, amongst the colourful language, Kluwe is articulate, informed, educated and rational. Those are attributes that the right wing conservatives here in Australia and it seems in the U.S. are in short supply of.

I particularly like this line from the letter. “If gay marriage becomes legal, are you worried that all of a sudden you’ll start thinking about penis? “Oh shit. Gay marriage just passed. Gotta get me some of that hot dong action!”

I can assure you that gay people getting married will have zero effect on your life. They won’t come into your house and steal your children. They won’t magically turn you into a lustful cockmonster.”

I love that we are now seeing high profile masculine straight athletes at the top of their game supporting equality and sending the message that being gay is ok. We must be getting closer to that crucial time when we start seeing athletes at an elite level in these big money team sports finally coming out and being accepted?
