Brazil’s decision isn’t anymore “new” than Mormons or Muslims who have had multiple wives for centuries. The divorce rate in ANY country undermines the “sanctity” of marriage. I think straight people are afraid that gay marriage will “upstage” their own marriages. Those of the same sex who want to marry may stay married longer than straight people and set a standard for the values of marriage. Being gay is often times looked at as having less value or being immoral. For an “immoral” couple to do something “valuable” longer than straight people I think makes them feel insecure. And question their own morality or question what is and what isn’t moral.

I think it looks like it is fundamentally different. In a polygamous marriage, each of the wives (as it typically is) is married individually to the the same husband, but as I understand such marriages, they are not married or partnered to each other.
