It’s bitter sweet

A couple of months ago I posted a birthday message to my grandfather, Dave who turned 96. Last night Dave finally passed away after battling a brain tumour and a lot of passing years for too long. Thankfully he passed quietly in his sleep. Dave had been ready to go for several years, often joking about how all the young guns at the golf club were dropping off. They were in their 70′s and 80′s, but this was a man that played 9 holes of golf on his 90th birthday. He hadn’t really been with us for at least a year but his health and athleticism for all those years just wouldn’t let him go.

As sad as it is to say goodbye to a truly fantastic man, he’s in a better place now and he’s not in pain anymore. Finally, if I were a believer I’d say he’s been reunited with my grandmother who passed away nearly 16 years ago. Goodbye Dave.

Its been years, but I still miss my grandparents. I’m pretty lucky to have known them as long as I did and to have had such great grandparents.

The great joy for us as grandchildren is to have our grandparents live with us into our adulthood. They give us such a link to those who came before us. My grandfather lived into his nineties and, while I was 21 when he went, he gave me such an insight into my family, my surroundings and the city I was born into. My grandfather has been dead now for over fifty years but he is still alive to me all these years later.

B, I am so sorry to hear about this. But, as someone who can identify with having a long-living grandparent, I am glad you were able to enjoy him as long as you did. My thoughts go out to you.
