I’m off out for dinner for Irishman’s birthday tonight. It’s going to be a lovely dinner with a couple of his friends then a couple of drinks. He’s got the day off tomorrow and will probably be hitting the town a bit with friends who aren’t working tomorrow either, so I don’t think I get to spend the night.

It sounds like a great plan. Something that is special but not overly “committed” at this point.
Gifts of time or consumables (things that you can “use up” & throw away) are especially good early in a relationship. They are also great when the giftee has everything or they are very hard to buy for.
Once a good friend “upgraded” some seats to a Ballet we went to. Instead of the cheap seats we had agreed on, they paid the extra as a surprise and purchased the expensive seats close to the stage. It was a really GREAT present and gives me such good memories!
