Next Sunday the next season of Australian Idol kicks off here and as much as I love the show and it’s car crash moments, I wonder why they are bothering. Each year the winner has been less successful than the previous year to the point where last year’s winner, Natalie Gauci released her winners single and has never been heard of again. I know they chose to let her record and release and album of new material instead of rushing out a winners album, but surely the moment has passed and no one gives a rats arse any more

I cant even remember the who the runner up was and they used to do better than the actual winner
I strongly disagree with you here Brenton.
All of my family and friends (even those who aren’t idol fans) ended up buying or borrowing Natalie’s album and we were all thoroughly impressed.
The trend I have noticed over the years is the top 12 are all higher callibre and it makes picking the winner quite hard.
On a side note - Carl Risely’s debut album has done quite well and he waited quite awhile after the show had finished before releasing it.
I think when looking at an artist’s success particularly when a show like Idol is involved, you need to remember that top40 and pop are not the only genres of music that sell. And certainly we haven’t had an Idol winner or runner up that has catered for the dance/club scene that so many gay men seem engrossed in these days.
I haven’t gathered so far what your personal tastes (other than numerous posts about Kylie and Madonna) regarding music are Brenton, but I think if an Idol winner or runner up released an album and it really catered to your tastes, you would change your tune a bit regarding Idol.
I agree with you Brenton, if Big Brother had to be taken of surely the days are numbered for Idol and thanks for telling me who won last year. All due respect to Natalie, I just could not remember and I did give it some thought. I kept thinking it was the Irish guy.
Amazing! TWO left-handed guitarists!
Or, has someone reversed the slide?
